Hidden away at the back of a charming courtyard on 15 Nevill St in Abergavenny, Rate Of Rise Coffee Roastery is a true sanctuary for coffee lovers seeking an exceptional brew experience. This coffee shop isn't just another pit stop; it's a carefully crafted retreat where freshness, flavour, and character come together in every cup.
At the heart of Rate Of Rise’s appeal is their dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Specialising in expertly roasted single-origin beans, like their signature Brazilian honey processed coffee, they bring the finest flavours to life with precision and care. Their Flat White—made with local Jersey milk, renowned for its creamy richness—is a standout highlight. Many customers describe it as silky smooth with a depth of flavour that lingers beautifully, and it’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the best flat whites in the country.
For those who truly want to savor the nuances of their roasts, the Pour Over V60 is a perfect choice, offering a delicately balanced cup that unfolds layers of unique aroma and taste in every sip. Meanwhile, options like the classic Espresso (£2.00) and Long Black (£3.00) showcase the versatility and freshness that define Rate Of Rise’s offerings.
The venue itself adds to the charm—a quirky, characterful space that was once an old garage or workshop, now transformed into a minimalist roastery-cum-coffee bar. Despite its industrial roots, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, amplified by friendly and knowledgeable staff who clearly take pride in every cup they pour. Many patrons rave about the courteous, efficient service and the presence of Fern, the resident collie, which adds a homely touch to the experience.
Visitors consistently highlight the breathtaking mountain views enjoyed while sitting outside, basking in the sunshine with a perfectly brewed coffee in hand. Though tucked away and sometimes tricky to locate behind the Fig Tree Espresso entrance, discovering Rate Of Rise feels like uncovering a hidden gem. Customers return time after time not just for the coffee but for the genuine connection and laid-back ambiance it fosters.
Customer insights paint a vivid picture: Mair Barron calls it "the best coffee in Abergavenny by a mile," appreciating the immaculate surroundings and stellar staff. Liam Morgan states that the “amazing oat flat white” and welcoming company make it a must-visit spot. Meanwhile, Dominika Matejkova found the freshly roasted beans so outstanding she had to take some home, confirming that this is not only a cafe but a coffee roastery elevating local coffee culture.
For those with mobility concerns, it’s worth noting that access involves a gravel path and several uneven old steps, part of the building’s unique historic charm. Nonetheless, this is a small testament to the authentic character you’ll find inside—a place where every detail, from roast to pour, has been thought through with genuine care.
In sum, Rate Of Rise Coffee Roastery isn’t simply a coffee shop; it’s an experience for those who want their coffee to be rich in flavour, steeped in craft, and served with heartfelt hospitality. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Abergavenny, this hidden coffee haven promises a sensory journey that lingers long after the last drop.

We had heard so much about the coffee here so we thought we'd try it. We are so glad we did. It's the best coffee in Abergavenny by a mile. We sat outside in the sunshine looking at the surrounding mountains. We can't believe we have not visited before. The cafe has character, is immaculate and the staff were extremely courteous and efficient. It is our 'go to' place for coffee now. It's a 5* from us!

Fantastic fresh coffee roasted on site. (No food there at the moment) Flat whites were superb. Jim the owner is really pleasant and helpfull. This is a quirky place, I think an old garage or workshop many years ago. NOTE although on ground floor, you go outside along a gravel path, there are then 6 or 7 very old uneven steps to go up to reach there. I mention this for those with walking difficulties like myself. But if you are into coffee it's well worth the effort!

I visited Rate Of Rise after hearing so many great reviews about their flat white. My mam and I went on Friday, and it was absolutely incredible! It was so good that I had to return on Saturday for more. The quality of the coffee was exceptional; I've never tasted anything so silky and smooth. Honestly, it’s one of the best flat whites I've ever had! The atmosphere was lovely, and the owner and their dog added to the charm. I’ll definitely be going back!

Best coffee in a long time, discovered completely by chance. A very pleasant place — you can even buy freshly roasted coffee beans!!The location might be confusing at first because there's another coffee shop at the front, but this one is well worth finding!

Hidden coffee retreat in Abergavenny. Located at the back of a courtyard with several other businesses through the Fig Tree Espresso entrance. Stopped by here before the food festival and was well worth it. Amazing coffee and a really friendly atmosphere with the staff. They were also doing espresso martinis which looked great.

Friendliest service and by far the best coffee I’ve ever had! Flat whites, pour overs and even the decaf absolutely delicious! Could not recommend enough - will be making this a regular stop each time we come to Wales from now on.
